His Honour Judge Donald Cryan was called to the Bar by Inner Temple in 1970 and became a Bencher of the Inn in 1992. He was appointed as a Circuit Judge in 1996, and sat regularly as a judge of the High Court in Family matters. During his career, he acted as Chairman of the Advisory Committee of the Institute of Family Law Arbitrators, the Judicial Studies Board Family Law Magisterial Committee and the Advisory Board of City Law School. In 2016, he was the Treasurer of the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple. Since 2019, he has been a visiting professor of law at Goldsmiths University of London..

Vice Presidents

Professor Paul Brand FBA is Emeritus Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, where he was Senior Research Fellow from 1999 to 2014. He has written extensively on English medieval legal history and is the editor of four Selden Society volumes.

The Hon Chief Justice Susan Kiefel AC was appointed Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia in January 2017, having served as a Justice of the High Court since 2007.

Literary Director

Professor Neil Jones is Professor of English Legal History at the University of Cambridge, and is Fellow and Director of Studies in Law at Magdalene College. He has written widely on the history of the law of trusts and was the recipient of the Selden Society’s David Yale Prize in 2003.


Professor Michael Lobban FBA is Professor of Legal History at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of All Souls College. He has written widely on the history of English legal thought and legal practice in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.


Professor Catharine  MacMillan is Professor of Private Law  at the Dickson Poon School of Law, King’s College, London. She is the author of a number of works on the history of private law.
